DragonFact:
“Show don’t Tell” is one of the most fundamental rules in children’s story writing. Give your readers action, not just narrative. Describe your characters by what they do, not just by what they think.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my book. Your words of encouragement are appreciated. Most appreciated, however, is your good advice.

Editing

Some stories need a lot of editing and some need only a few minor corrections. Out in the marketplace, one small error in grammar or puncuation can earn you a bad review and cost you hundreds of sales. The books that come out of the top publishing companies go through rigorous editing and your book will be competing side-by-side with them. DragonPencil editors are all truly dedicated to helping independent authors succeed. They hold degrees in English, Library Science and Education. Our professionally trained editors will offer commentary and corrections for your story. However, the editorial suggestions are just that, suggestions. You, the author, are responsible for the final text in your book including the edits you elect to keep or discard.

Manuscript Editing Editing(up to 1000 wds)

A full edit of your story includes all the critical elements that reviewers look out for. First, the basics; grammar, spelling, and puncutation. These kind of errors are not tolerated in children's literature because they learn proper usage primarily by reading.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does editing take?
Editing a picture book takes about two weeks. Longer works can take up to a month. Novels can take even longer.
Do I get any say in the editing?
Absolutely. You determine the final product. It will be up to you how much or how little of our editing comments you want to accept.
After I rewrite my story, incorporating what editing I want, will the editor look at it again?
If you ask, we will review it once more, looking for new errors in spelling, sentence stucture, and punctuation. Any further editing beyond that point will have to paid for.
How long should my story be?
A picture book story is usually under 500 words. Most are under 250 words. Stories in the 300+ word range might be better classified as illustrated story books. The distinction has no real implications except for librarians.

We will also assign a reading level to your book to assist with the marketing. If the reading level is higher than expected, the editor can point out the easiest ways to lower it. Character development and plot development are also reviewed by your editor along with story pacing.

If your book rhymes, your editor will also edit the rhyme scheme and meter. A reading level assessment is also included with Manuscript editing to help you better target your chosen age group.

Most children's books are under 1000 words. We charge 15 cents per word in excess of 1000. We charge this extra amount after editing is complete and we can get an accurate word count.

A full edit of your story includes all the critical elements that reviewers look out for. First, the basics; grammar, spelling, and puncutation. These kind of errors are not tolerated in children's literature because they learn proper usage primarily by reading.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does editing take?
Editing a chapter book takes about one week per 1000 words. Editing is generally conducted one chapter at a time.
Do I get any say in the editing?
Absolutely. You determine the final product. It will be up to you how much or how little of our editing comments you want to accept.
After I rewrite my story, incorporating what editing I want, will the editor look at it again?
We will review it once more after you have finished your second draft. Any further editing beyond that point will be charged 10 cent per word.
How long should my story be?
A chapter book or young adult novel typically ranges from 4000 to 50,000 words. There are no set rules, though. You have to make your book the length you think best. The first Harry Potter book was 80,000 words and the final Potter book was 200,000 words.

We will also assign a reading level to your book to assist with the marketing. If the reading level is higher or lower than expected, the editor can point out the easiest ways to lower it. Character development and plot development are also reviewed by your editor along with story pacing.

Included with this editing is one re-edit of the story after you have made changes suggested by the editor.

PCIP Generation (Publisher's Catalog In Publication Data)

We will generate the PCIP data for your book. This bit of information, placed on your copyright page, is helpful for selling books. The Library of Congress does not furnish CIP data to self-publishers. We generate this data to make your book more accessible to schools and public libraries and to help librarians discover your book. PCIP data is required for all library sales. A BISAC code (see below) is also helpful. In order to generate the PCIP for a book, the design process should be nearly complete. An ISBN and LCCN are also required before we can completely complete the PCIP data block for you.
Add to Cart/Purchase: $45

Note: PCIP Generation is available as a discounted option for all Publishing Packages.

BISAC Subject Heading Editing

The BISAC code, as it is commonly called, is an industry standard that has become a neccessary part of doing business in the book world. While not yet required by all traditional outlets, it is an absolute requirement for electronic books including Apple's iBookstore. This subject categorization requires an indepth knowledge of the book trade and library science.
Add to Cart/Purchase: $29

Note: The BISAC Subject Heading service is available at a discounted cost when purchased as part of a package. It is included in the Conventional Publisher Package. It can also be purchased at a discounted price when purchasing any other package.
