DragonFact:
Board books have the lowest cost to price ratio, meaning that it is harder to turn a profit.

Board Books

Listed below are discounted packages of publishing services for board books. Board books are also called baby books, concept books, and toddler books. They are tough and durable, able to stand up to the abuse babies and toddlers give them. Each package will transform the story you have written into a published book. There are distinct differences in these packages. If you need any assistance in choosing the right package for your needs, please call us.

Conventional Publisher Board Book Package

This package provides a traditional publishing experience. After books are completed and printed, they will enter 'the trade' in a formal manner. This is done through our distribution partner MB&B. Traditional publishing has become increasingly difficult to do successfully. We strongly recommend hiring a book publicist to increase your chances.

The Conventional Publisher Board Book Package includes everything listed below.

Pre-Design
Like any complex project, we start with planning. We take the time to do a rough layout of your book before diving in. This ensures that we won't run out of room and it gives the whole team a guide to go by as we go through the phases of production. If you are hiring an illustrator, the pre-design also provides an accurate count of how many illustrations are needed, how many spread illustrations, and how much room is needed by the text on each illustrated page.
Manuscript Editing

A full edit of your story includes all the critical elements that reviewers look out for. First, the basics; grammar, spelling, and puncutation. These kind of errors are not tolerated in children's literature because they learn proper usage primarily by reading.

If your book rhymes, your editor will also edit the rhyme scheme and meter. A reading level assessment is also included with Manuscript editing to help you better target your chosen age group.

*Most board books are under 300 words. We charge 15 cents per word in excess of 300. We charge this extra amount after editing is complete and we can get an accurate word count.

Project Manager
One of our project managers will guide you through the whole publishing process. From beginning to end, your project manager will coordinate the entire team, solve any problems that may arise, and answer any questions you have. You can reach your project manager by phone or through our Book Creation Center message board.
Top Quality Book Design
The books we design have won or have been nominated for every award in the publishing industry. We are known for our dedication to quality design. Putting together a book is not only a technical achievement, but also an artistic one. Your book designer adds the last layer of creativity to your book, making it a truly unique and special product.
Professional Cover Design
Designing a book cover is a special art form. There are several considerations that your book designer needs to design for. First, the cover needs to capture attention. It needs a compelling design that attracts someone's eye, either on the shelf, or as a tiny icon on a computer screen. Secondly, the cover must convey enough of the story to intrigue a potential purchaser, but not so much that their curiosity is fully satisfied. Third, the cover design must meet the standards and specifications that the industry expects. Lastly, the cover should feel appropriate to the target age of the book. NOTE: Covers usually employ an existing illustration from the book's interior. If special art is needed, that must be mmissioned from your illustrator.
ISBN Number & Barcode
ISBN is the International Standard Book Number. Every book must have a unique ISBN assigned to it. The company that has monopoly control of these numbers charges exhorbitant amounts for them, up to $150 for a single ISBN number and barcode. As part of this package, we will assign one of our Big Tent Books ISBNs and barcodes to you at no cost. If you ever want to leave the Dragonpencil family, you can always purchase your own ISBN and re-register the book.
LCCN
The Library of Congress Control Number is critical to your book being accepted by most library systems across the country and by library wholesalers. Two finished copies of your book will be sent to the Library of Congress to complete this process.
B I S A C
The BISAC category system provides retailers, libraries, and search engines with a simple way to find your book. Dragonpencil has experts in BISAC coding that will ensure your book is properly categorized.
Fulfillment Services*

In order to provide the industry with books, we must have books in our Minnesota warehouse. From there we pick, pack, and ship all orders both retail and wholesale. Any real shipping costs, not paid by your customers, are passed on to you. There are other minimal fees for processing orders and returns. See our fulfillment page or give us a call for a more detailed understanding of how it works.

*Fulfillment fees are minimal; 1 cent per book per month for storage and insurance. There is a minimum storage fee of $15 per month. There is also a half cent per book per month fee for insurance. For example if you have 2000 books in fulfillment, you would pay a total of $30 per month in fees. If you had 100 books in fulfillment, you would pay $15.50 in fees.

Long and Brief Summary
When you go to Amazon.com you will see a brief description and a long description for products. These same descriptions are used by retailers, distributors, wholesalers, and websites. The descriptions or summaries are written strategically. Not only an intriguing summary of the story, the description includes key words and phrases that people would use to search for a book like yours. It also has to be crafted with a marketing mind to maximize responses from reviewers, journalists, book clubs, and librarians.
Illustration Discount
All illustrations created for this book package are discounted by 15%. This can add up to a very large savings and it applies to any Dragonpencil illustrator you choose.
Offset Printing Discount

Since this package requires offset printing, we have managed to incorporate a $300 discount. Offset printing is still quite expensive but every little bit helps.

When you purchase the package, you will have the option to add other services (listed below) that may or may not be relevant to your current book.
